California and Climate Change



Proposition 23 was voted down by California voters on Nov. 2, 2010

KQED Radio discusses Proposition 23 which would suspend implementation of California's air pollution control law (AB 32) until unemployment drops to 5.5 percent or less for a full year. The speakers are Anita Mangels, communications director for Yes on 23, Craig Miller, senior editor for KQED's Climate Watch, and David Hochschild, vice president of external relations for Solaria.

Haiti's child slaves 

Haiti's children were vulnerable even before the devastating earthquake. Most had poor health care and little education. And many were exploited as child slaves. Marco Werman talks E. Benjamin Skinner who is the author of "A Crime So Monstrous: Face to Face with modern-day slavery". Skinner is also a fellow at Harvard's Carr Center for Human Rights. About 5 minutes.

Why does slavery continues?

We sometimes assume that because slavery was abolished in the 19th century, it doesn't go on today. However, Kevin Bales has made a study of modern slavery and in his shocking book "Disposable People", he estimates that there are around 27 million workers enslaved today - whether they are in debt bondage in a Pakistani brick factory, imprisoned in a brothel in Thailand, or sweating in a charcoal camp in Brazil. Benin in Western Africa is the scene of child slavery and trafficking but why does it continue? and how do the conditions of slavery today compare with those in the past? About 11 minutes.

On getting revenge and forgiveness

Michael McCullough describes the purpose of revenge. He also shows that human being have a forgiveness instinctive. Knowing this suggests ways to calm the revenge instinct in ourselves and others and emboldens the forgiveness intuition.  McCullough is also a professor of psychology at the University of Miami in Florida, where he directs the Laboratory for Social and Clinical Psychology. He wrote "Beyond Revenge: The Evolution of the Forgiveness Instinct". This is about 52 minutes.

The history of the extra-Constitutional Presidency

Garry Wills is an historian and author of "The Modern Presidency and the National Security State."  Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Wills argues that the atomic bomb paved the way for presidential authority that has "enfeebled" Congress and the courts, and that reached its apex with George W. Bush.
