Waging Peace

Paul Chappell's background includes his experiences as a West Point graduate, Iraq War veteran and author. Paul relates what he discovered about waging peace from his time in the military. Paul also speaks about how Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. waged peace. Paul grew up in Alabama, the son of a half-black and half-white father who fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars, and a Korean mother. Paul's web site is www.peacefulrevolution.com.

"When people in a democracy are not educated in the art of living - to strengthen their conscience, compassion and ability to question and think critically - they can be easily manipulated by fear and propaganda.  A democracy is only as wise as its citizens, and a democracy of ignorant citizens can be as dangerous as a dictatorship" ~ Paul K. Chappell
Paul elaborates on three kinds of change that will aid us to bring about peace, societal change, spiritual change, and ideological change. Paul shows how these changes take place gradually. Paul details a non-violent approach that can be used on a personal, community, national and global levels to bring about a different approach to handling disagreements, violence and aggression.

Peaceable Kingdom by John August Swanson
"Captain Paul K. Chappell has given us a crucial look at war and peace from the unique perspective of a soldier, and his new ideas show us why world peace is both necessary and possible in the 21st century." ~ Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate

End The War On Drugs

Dr. Carl Hart

Dr. Carl Hart says don’t blame drugs for society’s problems. Dr. Carl Hart grew up in a tough neighborhood in Miami. Carl tells Tom Ashbrook and us to end the war on drugs. Carl says we’ve misrepresented the effects of the drugs. He claims that we have confused effects of poverty and stifled ambition for drug effects.

The One-Page Plan To Fix Climate Change

Is climate change really a complicated, intractable problem? Listen to a couple economists about a very simple idea that could solve the climate-change problem: tax carbon emissions. A carbon tax could be paired with cuts in the income tax. And it would drive down emissions without picking winners or losers, and without creating complicated regulations.

Foreign Policy Begins At Home

Richard Haass
Richard Haass argues that for the U.S. to remain important in this century, it must reduce its foreign interventions (both military and humanitarian) and focus instead on restoring its own economic health. Richard is interviewed by E.J. Dionne a columnist for the Washington Post.

Richard says that U.S. national security depends on the United States addressing its burgeoning deficit and debt, crumbling infrastructure, second class schools, and outdated immigration system. Richard's primary focus is on domestic policy; the need to reverse the decline of U.S. competitiveness, stabilize the middle class, and strengthen the economy. Dr. Haass is the author or editor of eleven books on American foreign policy and one book on management.

Alternative Medicine Under The Microscope

Alan Weisman
Human Population Limits

Alan Weisman and Steve Curwood discuss the hot-button issue of reducing population. Weisman traveled to more than 20 countries, from India to Italy to Japan, to ask what experts agreed were probably the most important questions on Earth--and also the hardest: How many humans can the planet hold without capsizing? How might we actually arrive at a stable, optimum population, and design an economy to allow genuine prosperity without endless growth?
