To the Harvard Student interviewed about the endowment and climate change. I applaud their aggressive stance. They need to save the planet from fossil fuels and also blind institutional lethargy in responding to signals, be they environmental or market. But, she leaves something out. Harvard also has a responsibility for public interest because of the tax exemptions it enjoys on that endowment and on every $ in tuition it collects, or revenue from any research grant. That tax-exempt status as an NFP is for public service, not private service. Harvard needs to teach the law codes and constitutional principles a little more, obviously.
