They begin by discussing what are drones and the history of their use. Avery Plaw defends their use. David Cole criticizes the Obama administration for using them. Gregory Johnsen claims that drone casualties were driving Yemeni people towards al-Qaeda. Vickie Langohr moderates.

David D. Cole teaches constitutional law, national security, and criminal justice at Georgetown University Law Center.

Gregory Johnsen is a former Fulbright Fellow in Yemen and a PhD candidate at Princeton University. Gregory is a frequent guest on NPR, he has contributed essays to the New York Times. He lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

Vickie Langohr is the Director of College of the Holy Cross, Peace and Conflict Studies Program and teaches political science in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Avery Plaw is a professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Avery specializes in political theory and international relations, with a focus on strategic studies.

Climate Leaders talk with Tom Ashbrook

Climate leaders explain their views on the Keystone pipeline and divestment from fossil fuels with Tom Ashbrook.

Dorian Williams
Dorian Williams is an anthropology major at Brandeis University. Dorian is also a member of the Divest for Our Future campaign at Brandeis University. Dorian has been arrested twice in Washington with PowerShift 2011 and once at Keystone demonstrations.

Maura Cowley
Maura Cowley is the executive director of the Energy Action Coalition, which brings together 50 youth groups advocating for clean energy to slow climate change.

Emily Williams
Emily Williams is a 4th-year undergraduate student in environmental studies at UC Santa Barbara. Emily is also UCSB’s representative to the state-wide organization, the California Student Sustainability Coalition.

Nancy L. Cohen, Eric Deggans, Erin Aubrey Kaplan and Karen Elise Sternheimer talked about contemporary cultural issues and responded to questions from the audience. Erin Aubry Kaplan moderates.

Nancy L. Cohen is an author, historian, and political commentator who is recognized as a leading national expert on women and American politics. She authored Delirium: How the Sexual Counterrevolution is Polarizing America. Nancy has been a guest on "Up with Chris Hayes", "Ed Schultz Show", and on NPR, WNYC, and SiriusXM. She has written for the Los Angeles Times, New Republic, Playboy, the Guardian, RollingStone.com.


Eric Deggans
Eric Deggans is a TV, media and music critic for the Tampa Bay Times. Eric has been a guest on National Public Radio and has written for the National Sports Journalism Center at Indiana University.

Erin Aubrey Kaplan

The Challenges of an Empire with President Jimmy Carter

Jimmy Carter
Jimmy Carter is the 39th U.S. President, founder of The Carter Center and a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

He remarks on the U.S. continuing commitment to war. He states that the U.S. is in violation of 10 of the 30 paragraphs of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

He mentioned the gap between the wealthy and the rest of the country. He comments on the effect of unrestricted private funding of elections.

He claims that the U.S. is the only developed country with a death penalty. He states his opposition to the death penalty and assassination of Americans. Then he explains how the Carter Center attempts to remedy some of these problems.


Jimmy Carter's presidency was marked by the energy crisis and a troubled relationship with Iran. The Carter administration's foreign policy accomplishments included the Panama Canal treaties, the Camp David Accords, Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty, the SALT II treaty with the Soviet Union, and the establishment of U.S. diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. The Carter Center advances health and agriculture in the developing world. It has spearheaded the international effort to eradicate Guinea worm disease.
