Facing Racial Anxiety And Stereotype Threat

The U.S. prides itself on the ideal of equality. However, the educational, health care, and legal systems, are plagued by institutional biases against racial minorities. A closer look reveals that these disparities are likely not due to hateful intent, but caused by a combination of factors that include implicit bias, racial anxiety, and stereotype threat.

Lindsay Beyerstein interviews Rachel Godsil, research director of the Perception Institute, who explains how the unconscious associations and attitudes that we have towards people of different racial groups can affect the way we behave and what we can do to relieve some of the racial anxiety that may be inadvertently causing many of us to behave in ways that are contrary to our explicit values.

“All of us in law enforcement must be honest enough to acknowledge that much of our history is not pretty,” Comey said. “At many points in American history, law enforcement enforced the status quo, a status quo that was often brutally unfair to disfavored groups.” ~ FBI Director James Comey’s comments on race
